BAROLO
When grapes make history
At
Serradenari, when grapes make history they call it Vigna di Giulia. But this
happens only in exceptional vintages.
And even then, only a few hundred bottles – less than a thousand – get to be
called that. These rare bottles contain the fruit of three varietals from
the 59,200 square feet, of vineyard that constitutes the heart of
Serradenari – its warmest, southernmost section, which is, so to speak,
buried in the hillside and almost devoid of ventilation.
The characteristically white soil – mostly composed of clay and marl, in
which vines are planted in rows, identical to the ones that produced “five
days' worth of Barolo and Barbera” according to one account dated 1880 –
produces grapes that yield a wine of great behaviour and unmistakable
mineral hints.
Nine hundred bottles of this unique Barolo are produced only in the best
vintages and for a handful of wine lovers. That's when grapes go down in
history. |
